WE’RE CELEBRATING WORLD BOOK DAY!

April 22, 2019

In celebration of World Book Day (April 23, 2019), the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, partnering with Indigo Books & Music, is donating 50,000 books to high-needs schools!

We are marking this special occasion by donating classic book sets to Canadian high-needs elementary schools that were participants in our 2018 Adopt a School program.

This classic book set includes cherished pieces of literature that will be great additions to any school’s library. We know these classic tales will be cherished by the participating schools and will ignite their students’ imagination and wonder.

Since 2004, the Foundation has been dedicated to putting books in the hands of Canadian children of high-needs elementary schools. This is part of our commitment to transforming the lives of children across the country by inspiring in them a love of reading. Together with Indigo, its customers and its employees, we have provided over $30 million to over 3,000 schools, impacting more than 1,000,000 children.

We are investing in a Canada where every child has access to books. Learn more about the high-needs schools we have supported in the past.

How to Raise a Reader

January 21, 2019

Helping your child learn to read is not only a joyful, connecting experience, but is also incredibly important in inspiring their lifelong love of reading.

When you raise a reader, that love of reading helps develop and strengthen their literacy skills—critical for educational success—beyond reading comprehension, including stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention.

Here at the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, we want to share tips for how to help your child along their reading journey.

Is your child between the ages of 2 to 4?

You may notice that your child’s attention span is getting longer and they are following storylines. Now is a good time to introduce stories that deal with emotions. Here are some more reading tips:

Who doesn’t love reading a book with a rhyme? It is helpful for learning and is such a fun time!

Not only will it help your child with understanding the content of the story, but it also is a great way to build bonds over the books you are reading together.

You never know when a good reading moment will pop up! Keep a book handy for some impromptu reading that will also encourage your child to be an anytime reader.

Getting your child involved in the activity is an important part to building their confidence towards reading.

Here are some great titles to check out that touch on emotional themes.

Be sure to check back at loveofreading.org as we share more reading tips and resources. Thanks to our friends at Indigo Books & Music for providing some of these great ideas!

Partnering with Yoobi to give school supplies to Canadian classrooms

The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has partnered with Yoobi to help give back to high-needs schools. The Foundation believes every child should have the resources they need for educational success and this partnership with Yoobi is another step in achieving that!

In Canada, for every Yoobi item purchased at Indigo, Yoobi will donate a school supply item to a Canadian classroom in need. This is where the Foundation comes in! We partner with Yoobi to identify schools with limited access to fundamental school supplies that would greatly benefit from these additional resources.

As of November 2018, Yoobi and the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation have donated 127,500 school supplies to Canadian classrooms!

One of those schools was Lake Avenue Elementary School in Hamilton, Ontario where the Foundation and Yoobi made an in-person delivery with 20 Yoobi Classroom Packs filled to the brim with school supplies. The students at Lake Avenue were incredibly excited by the arrival of these school supplies and enjoyed an afternoon of drawing, writing and creating with the new supplies.

Together, with Indigo and Yoobi, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation is working to ensure that Canadian children at high-needs elementary schools have the tools they need to learn and be creative.
