From coast-to-coast the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation is committed to championing literacy and getting books into the hands of kids. This year, thousands of Canadian students will have access to essential literacy support through over $1 million in funding from our Literacy Fund Grant. To better understand just how impactful these funds will be, listen to the stories of students and staff from this year’s recipient schools!

Spotlighting this year’s readers

“I am looking forward to reading more books that show different cultures. I am from China and my classmates are from all over the world. I want to read books about us.”
– Mandy, Grade 5 student at Inglis Street Elementary School in Halifax, Nova Scotia

“I would really like to see more types of books in our library so I can see if I like them. I like reading chapter books and can’t wait to read new chapter book series of all kinds. It is exciting when we get new books!”
– Peyton, Grade 3 student at Sea View Elementary School in Port Alice, British Columbia

“I would want to see books that have a lot of action in them, because I like books with lots of twists and turns!”
– Henry, Grade 4 student at Harriett Todd Public School in Orillia, Ontario
Helping to revitalize school libraries across Canada

John C. Yesno Education Centre
Eabamet Lake, Ontario
“In Eabametoong First Nation, John C. Yesno School and its extensive library has been the hub for books and literacy in the community, despite an aging catalogue of books. After the tragic loss of the school building and library to fire in January 2024, teachers and staff immediately began to rethink what school looks like in a remote northern Ojibwe community. Alongside our new land-based education system, we are also committing to fostering a love of reading in our students. With the limited donations we have received so far, we’ve already seen students begin to take a real interest in reading as we cultivate the seed of a new library: one that truly reflects the identities of our students. We’re so excited to work with Indigo to expand our ability to engage students with books they will love their whole lives!”
– Hanna Waswa, Grade 8 Teacher
Annie Gale School
Calgary, Alberta
“The Annie Gale community is diverse, rich, and vibrant, and our students bring a treasure trove of life experiences and perspectives to the table. Giving our students access to reading materials in which they see themselves is invaluable – representation matters! The generosity of the Indigo Literacy Grant Fund will allow all students to develop a greater sense of belonging in the school community, promote inclusivity, and foster empathy by increasing exposure to a variety of ideas and perspectives through meaningful reading experiences.”
– Amber Donahue, Humanities Teacher and Learning Leader

O’Leary Elementary School
O’Leary, Prince Edward Island
“Our library is in dire need of revitalization as it has been years since we have been able to purchase any number of books for our school community. As a school, we have seen our population grow significantly and we want to take this opportunity to grow our students’ love of reading. The grant will enable us to purchase quality materials and to support the diversity within our growing population. Staff and students are thrilled to have this amazing opportunity given to us as it will make a huge difference!“
– David Costello, Principal
